The 1998 Remírez de Ganuza Reserva was classic Rioja - light lots of spicy oak on the nose, figs, crisp cherries, some subtle floral notes and a meatiness that showed later on. Oaky on the palate as well, with velvety tannins and really nice acidity. Still evolving over the night, it could go for a few more years. Great pour, but a touch disappointing at this price point. Tasted blind here.

yes, I guess you expect something pretty wonderful for that price...did you buy it recently or pull it out of your cellar?
Hi David - easy to enjoy that wine, but you always have to put the price in perspective. Grabbed it out of my cellar, been there for about two or three years I think. You drinking much Spanish these days?
I was on a Spanish kick for awhile but not as much lately. But one recent great value I had was the 2005 Number One Berberana Tempranillo, I'd been surprised after tasting it to check the price again and find it was $8. A bit more New World style than a traditional Rioja, but at that price I won't quibble much.
I'm rarely disappointed with a cheapo Spanish wine...
